The National Human Rights Commission taken
positively the statement of CPN (Maoist) Chairman Prachanda dated September
3 regarding the declaration of ceasefire by the CPN (M).
The Commission is hopeful that the declaration
of ceasefire by the CPN (M) would assist in the peace process and also
for the protection of human rights in the context of existing conflict
that has in many ways obstructed the protection of human rights.
The Commission requests to the CPN (M) and His Majesty's Government to make the best use of the opportunity by seeking ways to ensure peaceful resolution of the current conflict. Furthermore, the Commission appeals to the parties to sign on the Human Rights Accord prepared by the Commission to ensure their respect to human rights principles and towards ensuring the protection of human rights.
The Commission will carry out active monitoring of the human rights situation during the ceasefire in collaboration with civil society on the basis of international human rights standards and experiences. The Commission appeals to all to assist the Commission in its work and to work towards transforming the ceasefire into permanent peace.
